I found the Christ imagery used surrounding the appearances of the albatross very interesting, in particular in Part the Fifth lines 399-401. The comparison between Christ who died on the cross and the albatross that died at the hands of a cross bow seems too close to be coincidence. Also, earlier in the poem the albatross, at times refered to as a symbol of good will, arrives during the time of vespers, evening prayers. This point is further enforced when the dead bird literally becomes a symbol of the burden the mariner must carry (22 lbs according to the >>albatross website). Lines 141-142 explain: "Instead of the cross the albatross/About my neck was hung."
