Suspicious Behavior

Category: 06B: The Sheltering Sky | Matt Nickel

The Lyles are secretive and everywhere they travel they fall under suspicion by fellow travelers and locals. Port first becomes suspicious of Eric Lyle when Eric examines his luggage at the hotel. Port mentioned that when Eric entered his room, “He glanced about the room in a strangely surreptitious manner, his pale eyes darting swiftly from object to object” (page 63). Again Eric promotes his suspicious character when he asks Port for ten-thousand Francs. “Then he held forth his hand for the money. It made Port uncomfortable even now to recall the scene” (page 107). The Lyle’s suspicious behavior is only confined to Eric but at the end of the first book the mother also comes into suspicion. Mohammed tells Port, “He (Eric) pretended the woman was his mother, that he never would go near her, but I caught them together” (page 143). The Lyles are threatening to Kit and Port because Kit and Port have a secretive relationship with others as well. Kit is always suspicious of Tunner, just as Port is suspicious of Eric.
