The Botany Database was created and is maintained by Professors Barry Logan of Bowdoin College and Robert Thomas of Bates College. Initial funding for the project came from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Information Technology division at Bowdoin College provides technical and project support as do students working at both colleges.

All of the images in this resource are owned by their respective collections (see below). Educators and students may use these images as part of their teaching, research, and/or studies, but may not sell or otherwise make a profit on their use.

Kate Furbish Collection, George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library

Some images are from the Kate Furbish Collection which comprises bound volumes of her sketches and watercolors of flora. The drawings included in this database of the flora of Maine were done between 1870 and 1908.

Roberts Collection

Slides donated to Bowdoin College by David Roberts, Teaching Associate in Bowdoin's Physics Dept. The slides were taken by his parents Edmund and Catherine Roberts from the late 1960's to the early 1980's. The Roberts gathered the images in Hunterdon County, NJ, eastern Pennsylvania, and throughout Maine.

Thomas Collection

Images taken from slides in the teaching collection of Robert Thomas. Student assistants in various classes (including nature photography) contributed in part to this collection. The majority, however, were taken by Professor Thomas.
