Throughout Don Juan Byron seems to have a general interest in characters? physical beauty, both for its purely aesthetic purposes and for its telling descriptions of character traits. Indeed, on numerous occasions Lord Byron makes notes of his characters? eyes as essential and memorable features. Speaking of Donna Inez he says >>?Some women use their tongues - she look'd a lecture,? and of Donna Julia he says >>?her eye? Was large and dark, suppressing half its fire until she spoke.? Perhaps Byron is so fond of eyes because in a story brimming with dishonesty and hidden motives, a character?s eyes can accurately and sincerely express true emotions. There is something piercing, something permanent about a truly ?handsome? set of eyes, and for this reason Don Juan, after musing over the earth, the stars, ?the boundless skies,? and numerous other things, ultimately returns to the >>?thought of Donna Julia's eyes.? By ending Don Juan?s grand meditation with a thing so concrete as a person?s eyes, Byron seems to be drawing a distinction between that which can be skewed or misinterpreted in life, and that which is undeniably real.
