Meaning ?none deserve the name 'creator', except God and the poet,? this excerpt from Tasso speaks to Shelley?s views on organized religion. In equating the poet in grandeur with God, and at the same time saying that the poet can ?make a heaven out of hell? and vice versa, he brings the rigid structure of religion into question. He makes the organization of religion seem trivial and expresses that spirituality is an experience for the individual to undergo on his or her own terms. While it is evident that Shelley does believe in a God or higher power, it is simply in the role of ?creator? as opposed to dictator of the world?s truths. What is important in poetry the faculty it allows the brain to see the world in innovative ways and makes us see the world as a ?chaos? as opposed to the order and reason that are often associated with religion and Christianity in particular. This comparison of a poet with God furthers Shelley?s criticism of organized religion.
