The non- identity that John Clare describes in this poem appears to be a bit ambiguous; does it refer to the poet?s own life as lacking definition and significance, or does it describes the transformations of nature that proceed it? At this crucial point in the poem, the reader must decide on the interpretation. If the first interpretation is chosen, the ?maiden? in the poem appears to be the sole provider of meaning and worth in the poet?s life. If the second interpretation is chosen, the poem seems to focus more on the interconnectedness of life, death, and nature; here everything seems to merge into everything else to create a single, unified existence. The ambiguity of two words allow for drastically different interpretations of the same poem. I question whether Clare intended this.
